Leafcutter bee with my macro lens + extension tube. First time trying with good lighting.
Notice the hairs beneath the abdomen ("ventral" side... trying to learn anatomical terms). Those are one reason leafcutter bees are awesome pollinators, and more effective at pollination than a Honey Bee, based on what I have read from bee experts.
Honey Bees paste the pollen onto their legs which means not as much falls off as they go from flower to flower. The leafcutters collect it on that abdominal hair and spread large amounts as they travel between flowers.
I made a pinning board of bees, wasps and syrphid flies from my yard two years ago. I hated taking the lives of even these insects but waited until late in the season when they were about to die naturally. It has served as a wonderful teaching tool.
